Criticizing Others

How often have you heard someone criticize or tear down another? It isn’t pretty is it? Especially when it is a friend or loved one. The psychologist in us says that insecure people do this in order to pump themselves up, to make them feel better about themselves. Okay, so there is a reason, but it is pretty lame isn’t it? Cutting someone down or criticizing them to others is not an attractive quality to say the least. It certainly isn’t Christ-like is it? It is not something a person would do if Jesus were standing next to them is it? But you know what? Jesus is standing next to us all the time. He listens and watches everything we say and do. We want to be proud of how we act and how we treat people. Christ loves us unconditionally, but we want him to be proud of our efforts too. We’ve often heard it said, “you can’t change people, you can only change how you react to them.” I’m certainly not the one to ask for a pithy comment. I’m the one who usually stands there with my mouth ajar wondering how someone could be so unkind to another. I may think of something I should/could have said hours later, or the next day – most likely never.

Many of us were raised to ignore unkind/rude remarks. We must be polite no matter what. But what would be wrong if we simply said, “that really hurt my feelings” and just walked away. Do this even if other people were present. We certainly would not look bad, just honest, the only person who come off looking bad is the one criticizing or making the unkind comment.

On the other hand, do we do this? If we do, we can change our behavior. If Christ did not come into this world to condemn, but to save, then why do we condemn others? If we are insecure and/or suffer from low self esteem, the best way to feel better about ourselves and to raise others’ opinion of us is simply to be kind. It’s just that simple. Who doesn’t like a kind person?? We don’t have to be clever, intelligent, or funny, just KIND. If we do kind things for others and say kind, encouraging things to others – who wouldn’t like us? What a way to make Christ feel proud of us. It sure makes us proud of ourselves, and raises our self esteem. We must continually remind ourselves that it is not our place to judge others. That task belongs to God. When we criticize someone we are pronouncing judgment on them. Isn’t that what Christ called us to do?

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 NIV

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
John 3:16-21

“Many people don’t want their lives exposed to God’s light because they are afraid of what will be revealed. They don’t want to be changed. Don’t be surprised when these same people are threatened by your desire to obey God and do what is right because they are afraid that the light in you may expose some of the darkness in their lives. Rather than giving in to discouragement, keep praying that they will come to see how much better it is to live in the light than in darkness.”

More Free Printable Scripture Cards

There are a lot of things on my mind for this blog. Topics that race around and compete for the front of my mind. I've been reading about the Proverbs Woman and am working that around. I am also interested in writing about those who tear others down. Do you know someone like that? I know a couple and it is so sad as I watch the effect of their unkind words as they slice into others. It's especially hurtful when it is directed at a loved one. World religions are on my mind as our Bible Study is currently reading Adam Hamilton's book.

I have a couple more FREE printable scripture cards.

Prayer Card

Front Cover
Our minister, at St. John's United Methodist, taught us a couple of prayer methods earlier this fall. They have been around for quite a while, but I'd never heard of them before and was delighted! One is ACTS, which stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. The other method uses the fingers on your hand to remember those you should pray for. I wanted to DO something with them. At first I was thinking of a simple watercolor painting of a cross with ACTS on each of the points of the cross, and a hand of course with the explanation inside. Well, the whole idea just kind of sat in my head and I couldn't draw the cross the way I wanted. Then I thought about how I would reproduce them to share with others. I mentioned the fuzzy idea to my friend Elaine, and she said, "why not use those pretty cross stamps you have?" That's as far as I got until one day in the shower the idea just came all in a rush BAM! Every piece, how it could be arranged and even the very old stamp containing an Irish blessing on it came flooding in my mind. There is no doubt where this idea came from, it was not me. I'd tried to work it out for weeks and got nothing. The Holy Spirit presented me with this way of sharing it with others.

We made several in Card Ministry at Church last fall and gave them to our three ministers to give out and use how ever they would like. Then I made 32 more for all the ladies in my Bible Study. Several other people have said they would like them as well. I keep mine in a pocket in my Blessings Book, along with paper listing those who are on our prayer lists in Sunday School and Bible Study. Below is one the cards we've made. We made several color combinations, this is the one I have. You could do something like this with many different stamps. The descriptions for ACTS and the Hand prayer methods can easily be found on the internet. If you'd like to make something like this, I have the typed information and dimensions written out. When we make several at a time, it's really easy if I have the measurements written down, cause we get to talking and laughing and ... well you can imagine when a group of friends get together to make things right?

Gossip and What Scripture Tells Us

I never really considered myself a gossip. Did I talk about people? Well, yes sometimes, but I wasn't vicious about it. My Mom had talked to me quite a bit about the difference between talking about someone and malicious gossip. I bounced carelessly through life thinking I was doing pretty well on that score until a couple new coworkers came into my life. I'd never met anyone who gossiped the way these women did. It wasn't just occasionally either, it was incessant. They both professed to be Christian, attended church regularly, but the things they repeated about others... wow, just wow. I said something to one of them once and she replied, "well I never tell anything that isn't true."

Well that makes it quite alright doesn't it? When something very unfortunate happened to another coworker, something that I'm sure was very embarrassing, I can't imagine that she wanted it shared with everyone. Because, think about it, even if she told one person, by the time it was retold even 4 or 5 times the story would not be the same would it? Remember the old telephone/gossip game we played in elementary school? The person at the end NEVER had the same phrase that was told in the beginning. People are human, infallible creatures and we add, subtract and embellish anything we tell to another. We don't even realize it, it is human nature. This is why eyewitness testimonies vary so much from one person to another. Two people can see the same car accident and give entirely different reports to a police officer. Even something as simple as the color of the car in a hit and run can be seen differently by people. Retelling events is done with our life experience and one is never exactly the same as another.

After working with these two women for a while I began to look at myself and see something I did not like at all. So I decided to make a conscious effort to refrain from gossip. It took a while and I worked hard at it. Am I perfect? Of course not, but I continue to try hard and remember to stop and think a moment before repeating something about another person. “Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.” ―Bernard Meltzer

Another way to think about it is, would I say this if Jesus were standing next to me? What does Scripture say about gossip? There is that commandment about bearing false witness, but there's more:

Ex 23:1
“Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness.”

Prv 25:18
“Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor.”

2 Thes 3:11-12
“We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.”

Ps 57:4
“I am in the midst of lions; I lie among ravenous beasts- men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.”

Understanding Scripture

We have several Bibles in our house. My Daddy's Good News version, the big, elaborately beautiful King James family Bible, Grandma's King James, and my first Bible given to all 3rd graders by the Methodist Church. The one I use all the time is the NIV Life Application Study Bible. The modern language is so much easier for me to understand, along with the comentary, historical background and maps make this a much more used book. In fact, my husband was reading mine so often, I bought him his own copy last year.

A recent scripture in my calendar had me nodding my head thinking, "oh that's so nice."
"Are Not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of the them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs on  your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows." KJV Luke 12: 6-7

Then I thought, "what exactly is meant by that?" I pulled out my trusty Life Application Bible and looked at the commentary. "Our true value is God's estimate of our worth, not our peers'. Other people evaluate and categorize us according to how we perform, what we achieve, and how we look. But God cares for us, as he does for all of his creatures, because we belong to him. So we can face life without fear."
That makes this piece of scripture infinitely more meaningful to me. Perhaps it will  to you as well.

God Bless

Honoring Sabbath Margin in Life

My Womens' Bible Study finished  Breathe, by Priscilla Shirer this week. I always enjoy her studies and feel this one would be especially good for working mothers.

Shirer taught about the Sabbath and how it's not just on Sunday. We need to keep 'margin' in our lives so that we have time and space for God. I whole-heartedly agree with the concept of having margin in our lives. Since taking early retirement, I've actually had this experience and would not trade it for anything. I've become a much better person because I take time to enjoy the margin in my life. I wish I'd learned how to develop boundaries in my life when I was a young working mother. It keeps things, hobbies, work, and relationships in their proper place. As Shirer said, you only have one God and your allegiance is to him not your desire for other things. Once something is allowed to creep past its appropriate place in your life, it becomes a type of idolatry. She practices Honoring Sabbath margin in life as well, and in the video gives many excellent examples. She's so very right, it takes discipline to decline some of what life offers, but the Sabbath and the Sabbath Margin offers us the freedom from activities that keep us so busy.

This is the big idea I marked in my book: "When you choose to have a Sabbath heart about  your activities and possessions, you're doing more than just keeping yourself from living a stress-filled, clutter-laden life. You are also honoring God's purpose by setting aside space and time to foster holy intimacy. The break we take form the regular pattern of our lives in any area gives us occasion to see Yahweh clearly without the distraction and distortion of excess."

Books!

I talked to my Minister today and about devotional books and he gave me a recommendation that I'm very excited about. The book is called, One Year At His Feet, by Chris Tiegreen. I've already ordered it from Amazon! I've been using the Upper Room for years, but I'm finding I need something different. Since it is shipping from my home state, I hope to have it in my hot little hands by .... dare I say it.... Saturday. One can hope right?
I learned of another Bible study book today. A friend of mine attends a different Bible study and they are currently reading Jeremiah - Daring to Hope in An Unstable World by Melissa Spoelstra. She said it is amazingly good and she's getting a lot out of it. Interestingly, there is a preview edition available for Kindle for $1.89. I think I'll buy that as well. I mean for only two bucks right?
I'm just itching to get into a study of scripture too. Can  you tell I adore reading? I collect books, and especially love the feel of a well loved leather book in my hands. I do have one on Ephesians, but I can't read TOO many books at one time or my brain will blow a fuse!

I read all kinds of things. For a while I was reading Russian history, then it was Art History, then the Civil War, oh and marine science, then it was everything/anything I could get my hands on about Ireland and Scotland. Of course I always love a good mystery, as long as it's not too scarey or creepy. I'm a very sensitive soul, so it doesn't take much to give me nightmares. (the part in Jurassic Park where the tyrannosaurus ate a man gave me nightmares for a week) I adore happy endings, so a good romance is always a good read as long as it's not too racy.

The language of the King James Version is beautiful, but I do so enjoy my NIV Life Application Study Bible

Card Ministry

This Ministry is growing by leaps and bounds. The United Methodist Women asked for some thank you, get well and thinking of you cards, and we are making 100 prayer cards for Grace Kitchen. This is on top of what we make for the Ministers and staff. It makes me soooo happy that we can do something that puts smiles on faces and is so appreciated:) The ladies in the group are the sweetest gals and I always enjoy spending time with them.

We got caught up on Birthday cards for Seniors and put a dent in the 100 prayer cards needed for Grace Kitchen today. Then we learned that the Sympathy cards were kind of low. We will make some of those next time. I'm working on some thank you cards to get the UMW started right now.

Women of God books

Our church has a women's Bible Study called 'Sisters.' These women have so enriched my life! I'm so blessed to have this wonderful weekly Bible Study. I've really enjoyed the book we're finishing this week. It's Breathe, by Priscilla Shirer. However, I am totally excited to begin our next one! Christianity and World Religions by Adam Hamilton. Although I am a Christian, I want to learn about other religions because I want to know how God is at work in other religions, I believe that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. He alone is the way to salvation. I do wonder what will happen to those who earnestly pursue God through other religions.  The other thing is because of current world affairs, I want to learn from a well-respected Minister such as Hamilton, about the Muslim faith. I have to admit it kinda scares me a little bit. I do realize that there is a lot of misinformation out there and I want to be better informed. Hamilton says that by understanding others' faith, "we will gain new understanding that will enable us to build bridges with them so that we might grow in our Christian faith, seek peace in our world, love our neighbor, and find positive ways to share the gospel." This is something I feel the need to read. I got the book today and it is in my hands right now.

I absolutely ADORE this quote! I saw it on the web somewhere and sadly, I don't know the author. I printed it in Photoshop hoping it would look kind of like a poster. I would love to imprint this on the mind of every young girl, wouldn't you?

Faith Journal or Blessing Book

My first Blessing Book, which is now full.
Last fall, my friend Wendy, shared a notebook she used to keep inspiration scripture in. This idea really appealed to me and as soon as I looked on Pinterest, I found lots of prayer journals, Faith Jounals and such. I quickly decided to make one of my own. Naturally, being an avid scrapbooker and stamper, I had to create something pretty. I mainly collected scriptures that I like and I called it a Blessing Book. I even wrote tutorials on the three I've made. I've just finished filling the first one, and will give one to a friend. I've decided to expand my journaling. I think I'll call my second one a "Faith Notebook," I like the sound of that! Below you will find some ideas I've come across to help you make  your own Faith Notebook, or Blessing Book.

Pages of Faith
  • All the pages should be handwritten, perhaps even with colorful gel pens for some
  • Will provide a way for you to become closer to God
  • Can be a great reminder of what you have to be thankful for, no matter what situation you are facing
  • Decorate it with pretty patterned paper, colorful stickers or maybe some colorful doodles
  • When looking back through the pages, you will be able to see positive life changes; prayers that have been answered and how your faith has grown.
  • Favorite passages of scripture always bring a smile and uplift your spirit
  • Friends, daughters, and granddaughters will see it and may want to make one of their own, Wouldn’t that be awesome?!
Materials:
  • A composition book, notebook, journal, or handmade book
  • Colorful things to write with or just a nice pen
  • Pretty Patterned scrapbook paper or stickers
  • All that’s really needed is a notebook, but if it’s dolled up a bit, and looks pretty, it will be inviting and you will find yourself wanting to write in it.
Just start writing.
You can write about anything you want in your Faith Notebook, favorite bible verses, Inspirational quotes, prayers, insights from Bible Study, and simply what is on your heart. I often find great inspiration in the commentary of my Bible (the NIV Life Application Study Bible). The point is, to collect your thoughts so you can go back and remember what you have learned, and what has inspired and uplifted you.

Be sure to personalize your notebook.
One woman liked to doodle and create, so she drew illustrations for analogies about the Bible verses she wrote in her notebook. My friend Beryl and I made little mini albums with pockets and other interactive components. Another woman said she talked to herself with reminders and even little pep talks for “the messy game of life.” Someone else said she found happiness in her silly drawings and analogy type cartoons. What about the lyrics to a favorite hymn or even a country song?  Nothing will make you happier than an ongoing relationship with God. Write about it, have fun with it, and remember God has a great sense of humor too.

Write down your prayers.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing.”  Your prayers are an open line of communication between you and God.  When you write them down, you will be able to see that they have been answered when you look back on them.  Follow up on the people who have requested prayers. How is their sick Aunt? Was their Grandfather’s surgery successful? Be sure to record the praises as well as the prayers.

Proverbs 3:vv 3, 5, 6
Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

My Faith Journey

You know, starting this separate blog is not something I thought a lot about. I came across a blog yesterday that really inspired me, and BAM! I decided to do it. You see, I've learned to really listen when I hear the Holy Spirit speak to my heart:)

I'm fortunate enough to be in a Bible Study at St. John's United Methodist Church that has been the biggest blessing. It's called 'Sisters Bible Study" and the women are some of the most encouraging, uplifting people you will ever come across. We're not all Methodists either. We have women from 2 or three different Baptist churches, some from the Catholic church, and others as well. We all love and support each other.

As my friend Beryl and I prepare to show some of the ladies how to make a Blessing Book, I created a couple different styles and posted tutorials on my blog. Then I naturally became drawn to what others have been doing on Pinterest. Wow! there are soooo many wonderful ideas out there:) I hope you will join me as I share some of these wonderful ideas and some of my own thoughts as well.

So here are few things I'd like to share:

"Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing is so gentle as true strength.” ~Ralph Sockman.
